Traffic issues meeting
It was strange, after spending over an hour hearing about the congestion, speeding, danger at junctions, difficult pavements and the impossibility of ever finding a place to park, to walk out on to a peaceful village scene with car parking spaces clearly available and hardly a vehicle in the road. The most sensible remark I heard was later on in the day from someone who had not gone to the meeting – “So? It’s a busy village!”
There are, of course, problems, one or two of them serious, most of them mere inconveniences. In my opinion, and you may think otherwise, the worst problems are:
The deadly walk down the Crewkerne Road by Natalia Terrace which mercifully, if belatedly, is being addressed.
The blocking of Bull Lane by cars parked near the junction with Dorchester Road. This is serious because the Fire Engine sometimes cannot pass and it forces pedestrians into the middle of a narrow, pavementless road.
The unsatisfactory “traffic calming” in Dorchester Road near Frome Lane. I think the planners did their best here but it is a very difficult one to get right. At the moment people have to cross the road twice or shuffle along the sections without pavement. Perhaps this needs looking at again.
I do not believe that speeding is anything other than an intermittently serious problem except for the Crewkerne Road at FV.
Despite the popular conception I do not believe that parking is a serious problem in the village except for those with no off road parking and parking restriction near their house. I have lived right in the middle of the village for years and do not recall ever being unable to park within 150 metres of my house. 90% of the time I can park right outside. The general consensus that the car park is always or, at least often, full is just plain wrong. I don’t particularly mind if it is enlarged a bit but only on the basis of real evidence of real need. Not guesswork and perception. (Naturally, just to prove me wrong, two camper vans have taken up residence there managing to fill four spaces. Hey ho). However parking could become a serious problem if double yellow lines started spreading as was suggest by a few at the meeting (all people with off road parking themselves, by the way).

Alot of the problems are caused by the parking outside the paper shop, this makes it hard for drivers to see coming out of the junction by the corner shop and traffic coming up from the chip shop. There will be an accident if nothing is done as this is a dangerous situation.Yellow lines should be in place

No more yellow lines please! They always increase traffic speeds and in that particular position would seriously damage viability of the Newsagents and the Corner Stores.
I have lived here for a quarter of a century and do not recall any accident at that point, certainly nothing at all serious.

I don't think it would harm the corner shop there is plenty of parking in church rd/street,but parking at the newsagents and the houses by the fish shop do cause congestion and also traffic coming out of white horse mews etc, this is a concern, and will only get worse with all the new houses being built. And you can always buy your paper etc from the garage lol

I was looking on here earlier and there was more where has it all gone, it is good to have this facility but should be careful how it is monitored people should be allowed to have thier say without too much restriction or it will not catch on

Double yellow lines throughout the village,as desired mostly by Maiden Newton residents who are in smug possession of a drive or garage, would turn the village into a race track. I have rarely seen problematic congestion outside the newsagents, at least there is a pavement to walk on, unlike the garage , where you have to take your life in your hands to visit.
On another note, I would like to know why, with all the property development going on in Maiden Newton, Greenford school are having to close a class due to dwindling numbers. All of the recent development and no affordable housing being built...? I know about the proposals for the Dorchester end of the village but why is it on the outskirts? where we will still have problems with pavements etc

I have just been informed by a local councillor that the pathway in FV could take a while to be done and is a low priority, how come that Frampton has had vast amounts of money spent on pavements etc when quite frankly it is rare to see anybody walking on them anyway. It seems it was so residents could get drives and hideous houses to be built there was obviously no other reason, how about putting them where they are really needed FV is a far better cause and certainly needs it

I beg to differ about the parking outside the paper shop and fish shop,it is dangerous and something should be done about it.It gets congested and causes tail backs and quite honestly it is a pain, trying to get into church road also is a problem when all the cars are parked and there is a delivery at the shop.Cars park opposite the paper shop as well which is really stupid, this doesn't help by letting new houses be built where they are.People should be made to park in the car park which personally i have never seen full.

Today was a prime example of the parking outside the paper shop.It is terrible how cars park the way they do, something should be done about it,how an accident hasn't happened yet it is unbelievable, lets stop the chaos now.C

I found out that the reason the large lorries are coming through the village is the fact that it is an A road. This could be solved by changing the road to a B road, but the down side is that this will mean that gritting etc will stop.I think we need to weigh the pro's and con's and see what would be best all round.ST

Banning lorries is the answer the sooner the better

Closing the bloody road is an even better solution, and the summer is just around the corner so even worse. And the lorries that come through with dead animals on will smell even more sickly,oh the joy's of country life..

Yet again 2 bloody lorries in the school road, lets hope a fire engine or ambulance doesn't need to get through as the space left with parking bothe sides of the road is just wide enough for a car....
